Bad breath, officially known as Halitosis, is a common condition which affects around one in four people. The causes of bad breath are almost impossible to pinpoint as there are so many factors that can contribute to it, such as poor dental habits, medical conditions and what you eat.

Food that is consumed, is broken down into thousands of particles  and can have a strong effect on your breath, especially if you there is a tendency to eat a lot of strong odorous foods, such as onions or garlic. However, bad breath can be avoided if you have good dental habits and hygiene. 

Brushing and flossing daily can easily be forgotten, which allows bad breath the perfect environment to flourish. Particles which remain in your mouth enable bacteria known as plaque to grow between your teeth, around your gums and on the tongue. Cleaning your teeth can not only leave you with fresh breath for longer, but will also help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

There are various habits that we develop during our lives that can lead to having bad breath, including smoking or chewing tobacco-based products, drinking coffee regularly which leads to stained teeth, and eating sugary sweets regularly which increases plaque.

Now that we have determined some of the factors that propagate bad breath, what can be done in order to prevent bad odours in our mouths? We can start by practising good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and develop flossing into your daily routine, without forgetting to brush your tongue. Regular trips to your dentist is essential as they will be able to catch and/or prevent any problems that could cause bad breath.

If you believe that food is causing your bad breath then drinking water will help to keep your mouth moist, which leads to the stimulation of producing saliva, working to wash away any remaining food particles and bacteria. A good idea is to  keep a food diary of what and when you eat, and what medications you have taken as they can add to the factors, which your dentist will help to review and solve.
